Onions are surprisingly easy to grow! They are planted early in the spring and harvested from midsummer through the fall. Whether you start your onions from seed or from sets, there are some tricks of the trade that make the difference between a great crop and a disappointing one.
Onions need full sun. Select a location where your onions won't be shaded by other plants. Onions need well-drained, loose and nitrogen-rich soil. Till or turn your garden soil as soon as it is workable in the spring.
Onions are most often grown from bulbs, or “sets”, in the spring but can usually make a successful crop when fall planted. One bulb will produce one onion; sets may be planted 2” apart if harvested as scallions or 'green onions', or 4”-6” apart if allowed to mature into a full-sized cooking onion.
It's a little-known fact that many seasoned gardeners aren't aware of: you can grow onions (and shallots) in the winter. These super-hardy plants can survive incredibly cold temperatures with a little protection, and provide quality bulbs even after they bolt in the spring.
Onions need about 1 inch of water per week, so if the weather is dry, you'll need to water.
